Help your students write detailed and descriptive sentences with these Stretchy Sentences Worksheets and Poster Pack.
Teach Students to Write Descriptive Sentences
Here is an example of how the worksheet could be used to build a more comprehensive sentence:
- Yesterday… (when)
- Yesterday, my brother and I… (who)
- Yesterday, my brother and I walked… (what)
- Yesterday, my brother and I walked to the park… (where)
- Yesterday, my brother and I walked to the park to play on the swings. (why)
This pack fosters creativity by encouraging students to think about the details of their sentences, helping them learn to paint a picture with their words.
Step-by-Step Tips for Teaching the Concept of Stretchy Sentences
This resource may look simple, but it can easily support a full sentence‑writing lesson!
- Introduce the 5Ws – Begin by explaining when, who, what, where, and why. Use examples to show how each detail helps strengthen a sentence. The poster is great for this!
- Model as a Whole Class – Pick one of the detailed worksheets, and project this onto your whiteboard – complete this worksheet as a class. Don’t worry – there are plenty more for independent work.
- Independent Sentence Building – Provide students with a different worksheet and get them to complete this independently.
- Peer Sharing – Students share their sentences with a partner or group. Encourage discussion on what makes a sentence engaging and how details change the reader’s understanding.
