What Is the Percent of a Number? A Kid-Friendly Definition
When you're introducing a new concept, it helps to have a script on hand to explain what it is all about. Here's how our teacher team explains what it means to calculate the percent of a number!
When we try to figure out the percent of a number, we're trying to find a part or a portion of that number.
For example, let's say you ordered 20 pizzas for a party. 30% of the pizzas have green peppers and 70% have pepperoni.
So, when we say "calculate the percent of a number," we are figuring out exactly how many pizzas have a particular topping, or determining a certain part of the total amount.
Teaching Kids How to Find the Percent of a Number
So how do you actually teach your class to make these calculations?
Your students will need to understand that a percent is the same as a fraction out of 100 — 100 is the denominator of the fraction, and the percent of the number is represented as the numerator.
Understanding that a fraction like 60/100 can be represented as a percent and a decimal is key to students' understanding of the calculations required to find a percent!
So, for example, 30% means 30 out of 100. It can be represented as the fraction 30/100 or the decimal .3.
To find the percent of a number, we multiply that number by the fraction or decimal representing the percent. The formula to do this looks like this:
- Percent = (part / whole) x 100
