Read the narrative text, Tom Tom by Rosemary Sullivan, to the class. Alternatively, watch a video reading of the text on YouTube. (Note: This video has some minor reading errors; however, these do not interfere with the authenticity of the text). After reading, ask the students:
- What is similar between your life and Tom Tom's life?
- What is different between your life and Tom Tom's life?
- What are some of the places Tom Tom travels to throughout the day?

Ask the students to recall some of the special places that Tom Tom frequents in the book. As a class, create a map of Tom Tom's community and the places that are special to him.
Display and discuss slide 16 of the People Live in Places PowerPoint. Ask the students:
- What are some of the special places in our local community?
- Who are the people who belong to our community?
- Who cares for our community?
Display slide 17. Use Google Earth to locate your local area through the search function. While viewing the satellite images, ask the students:
- What do you notice about our local community?
- What are the natural features?
- What are the built features?

Display slide 18 and discuss the independent task. Refer the students back to the map of Tom Tom's community and his daily journey to assist them with their thinking.
Provide each student with a copy of the A Journey Worksheet and answer any questions the student may have.
Monitor and support the students as they complete the task. Once they have finished, encourage the students to share their journeys and special places in the community with the rest of the class.

As a class, plot each student's special place in the community using Google My Maps to visually represent the information.
