Identify triggers for challenging student behavior using an ABC Behavior Chart.
What is An ABC Behavior Chart? A Quick Refresh
The ABC recording method of data collection refers to the behavioral analysis technique of ‘Antecedent-Behavior-Consequence’. This approach was developed by B.F Skinner, a renowned psychologist.
An ABC Behavior Chart is a tool used to gather information about a student’s behavior. ABC stands for Antecedent, Behavior, and Consequence. The chart helps identify what happens before (Antecedent), during (Behavior), and after (Consequence) a behavior occurs. Using this method of behavior record-keeping is extremely useful in understanding why a student might exhibit challenging behaviors since it provides a place to track specific behavioral incidents over time. Many teachers and behavior interventionists often use this approach to identify triggers for behaviors and develop strategies for intervention and support.
