Map Elements Matching Game – Elementary Geography Lesson

Enhance your geography lessons in elementary grades with a map elements matching game. This game is designed to be played as a Concentration or Go Fish! Game. Students will match terms, images, and descriptions of different elements commonly found on maps.

What Are the Different Elements on a Map?

The elements of a map included in this resource are as follows:

  • Map title
  • Compass rose
  • Legend
  • Map key
  • Scale
  • Latitude and longitude

This activity will guide students to discover

  • What do you call the part of a map that tells direction?
  • What are the parts of a map?
  • What part of the map shows distance?
  • Which map part tells the user what the map symbols stand for?
  • What does a compass rose look like?
  • What are the lines on a map called?

For students who need extra support, use this matching game as an intervention activity or with a guided small group.

A Variety of Ways to Prepare This Resource

Print the cards double-sided. This allows for each card to have both a front and back. Cut apart the cards and place them in an envelope for easy storage.

Additionally, project the cards onto a screen using a document camera and have your students write their answers on a whiteboard.
