Teaching Kindergarten Writing? Use a Visual Writing Rubric!

What is a visual writing rubric, and why do kindergarten writers need one? That’s an easy one! A visual writing rubric is a poster, chart, or handout designed to give early writers an easy-to-understand view of what their writing needs to look like. Using visual writing rubrics with early writers can be extremely helpful for aspiring authors because:

  •  Visual rubrics use pictures and simple language to show what is expected in their writing. This helps kindergarteners understand what good writing looks like without needing to read instructions.
  • Many kindergarten-aged children are still developing their reading skills. Visual rubrics accommodate this developmental stage by providing information in an easily understandable format.
  • A visual rubric enables kindergarteners to self-assess their work by comparing it to examples identifying areas for improvement and strengths.

This printable resource is an easy-to-read, easy-to-understand visual writing rubric for beginning writers. It provides them with a variety of elements to look for in their writing and examples of what their writing should/could look like.
