An Interactive Bulletin Board Set to Enhance Number Recognition
This interactive bulletin board for numbers 1 – 10 will help your kindergarten students connect number names, numerals, quantities, and more. This resource is curriculum-aligned and includes all the components you might need for a colorful and educational classroom display!
The resource includes the following representations of the numbers 1–10, with corresponding labels:
- numeral form
- word form
- tally marks
- fingers
- ten frame
- base-10 blocks
- number line
- subitizing dots
As you introduce each number, choose the related components to compile your wall display. Use all the representations of the number, or pick and choose those you wish to introduce to your students. A colorful title banner is also included. Be sure to download both available files from the drop-down menu.
Introducing the Number Line
When you first introduce your students to a number line, it’s a good idea to show a line extending in both directions without referring to the left side of 0 (the origin). By doing so, you’ll create wonderful opportunities to develop problem-solving, reasoning skills, and mathematical vocabulary. Ask open questions such as:
- How could we label this number line?
- What is the value of each interval?
- Where should we put zero?
- What number comes before and after the given number?
Counting on Fingers
Researchers have found that when 6-year-olds improved the quality of their finger representation, they improved in arithmetic knowledge, particularly skills such as counting and number ordering. Because using fingers for counting is so useful, we’ve made it a feature of this classroom display! As you introduce numbers 1-10, don’t forget to encourage your students to show you each number on their fingers.
