Use Sequencing Activities to Reinforce Number Sense

Are you searching for sequencing activities that will engage and educate your students?  This sausage dog craft is a great way to “stretch” your students’ skills in ordering and comparing numbers!

Our sausage dog “craftivity” includes:

  • Sausage dog template
  • Numbers 1 – 9 word form pieces
  • Numbers 1 – 9 numeral form pieces (with dots)
  • Sausage dog extenders

The file includes both the color and black-and-white versions of our sequencing sausage dog. We recommend printing and laminating the color version for a reusable centers activity, and using the black-and-white template as an individual activity.

How to Create This Sequencing Activity

Here’s how to make one of our favorite sequencing activities for Kindergarten:

  1. Print, cut, and laminate the head and tail of the sausage dog and the individual number sequencing cards.
  2. Print, cut, and laminate the number expander, then fold it to create an accordion tummy and attach it to the dog’s head and tail.
  3. Attach velcro dots or magnets to the back of each number card and to each rectangle on the number expander.
  4. Provide students with a complete set of the sausage dog and number sequencing cards. Students then use the cards to sequence the numbers from 1 to 9.
  5. Alternatively, students can sequence the number cards on the floor from 1 to 9 with the dog’s head at the start and its tail at the end.
  6. Choose between using numerals with dots or numbers written in words.
