Slow and Steady Wins the Race – Odd and Even Properties

This worksheet pack has been designed to engage students in fun and interactive activities that reinforce their understanding of the properties of odd and even numbers. In this worksheet pack, students will use their knowledge to determine whether the results of equations are odd or even, then color a pathway to guide the snail home, and complete a True or False activity in which they justify whether the outcome of the equations is even or odd and why.

If students know the rules around calculating odd and even numbers, they can focus purely on those rules rather than working out the answer to determine if the result is odd or even.

Odd and Even Rules When Calculating

Understanding the different rules that apply to odd and even numbers when you add, subtract, multiply, and divide is crucial to understanding odd and even numbers. Teachers can use this worksheet pack in several ways to help reinforce odd and even rules, such as:

  • Math Mystery Path Challenge – Turn the worksheet into a mini challenge by having students predict which pathway will get the snail home before coloring, then justify their choices using odd and even rules.
  • Explain‑the‑Rule Swap – After completing a section, students swap worksheets with a partner and check each other’s pathways, explaining aloud whether each result should be odd or even and why.
  • Human Snail Race – Recreate the pathway on the floor or board and have students act as the snail, moving forward only when the class correctly identifies and explains if a sum is odd or even.
