Subitizing Mazes for Young Mathematicians

Our subitizing mazes are an engaging way to ensure your students get enough practice subitizing small collections. Students will enjoy helping the characters make their way to the end of these mazes and may not realize they are learning in the process!

This worksheet set includes the following:

  • Subitizing Maze (Numbers 1 – 3)
  • Subitizing Maze (Numbers 4 – 6)
  • Subitizing Maze (Numbers 7 – 10)

An answer key for each maze is also included so students can check their work. These mazes have many uses but will work especially well for independent practice, centers, small groups, or fast finishers.

What Is Subitizing NOT?

It’s easy to confuse the skill of subitizing with several other skills and concepts. Here is a list of things that are NOT the same as subitizing:

  • Counting: Subitizing involves recognizing quantities instantly without counting.
  • Estimation: Subitizing requires an exact amount, whereas estimation involves making an approximate guess.
  • Numeral Recognition: Recognizing numerals (like “4”) differs from subitizing, which is about visualizing quantities.
  • One-to-One Correspondence: This skill involves matching a single item to a single number, unlike subitizing, which requires instant recognition of the quantity in groups.

However, these skills have two things in common: They are essential for early learners, and we have resources to help you teach them all!
