What is Subitizing?
Subitizing is the ability to instantly recognize the number of objects in a set without counting them. If you are unfamiliar with this term, you are not alone! The word “subitize” has only been around since 1949 when the word was coined by a research team led by psychologist E.L.Kaufman. It is derived from the Latin word “subitus,” which means “sudden.”
Subitizing is an important skill for early learners. It can play an essential part in developing students’ number sense and understanding of quantity. Children skilled at subitizing often have an easier time counting, adding, subtracting, and problem-solving.
Luckily there are many ways to teach your students to subitize! Be sure to check out the many subitizing resources we have here at Teach Starter to get you started.
