How to Teach Subitizing to Kindergarten

There are many strategies teachers can employ to teach their kindergarten students to subitize. Here are some ideas you can try in your classroom:

  • Dice Games: Regularly incorporate games that require dice to play so students get frequent practice subitizing to six with structured arrangements.
  • Dot Flash: Display an arrangement of dots to students for one second. Ask the students how many dots they saw. Students enjoy playing this in partners with whiteboards.
  • Subitizing Search: Encourage students to point out small collections of objects in everyday life that they can subitize.
  • Math Manipulatives: Curate a robust collection of math manipulatives and templates that encourage students to subitize, such as base-10 blocks, ten frames, snap cubes, beans, counters, and more.
